Past due for an update....

With Wesley getting older and more playful, it's hard to leave him to update his site.... I'll try to do better moving forward. But as of tonight, Wesley is back in the hospital, therefore Mom has time to be online. He continues to have problems with his digestive system and gets an illeus about once a month. We were in the hospital the end of August and September with this problem. He started to have the same problem the end of October, but we were able to correct it at home. Unfortunately it started again yesterday, and he wasn't getting any better, so Dad took him to the hospital today.

With the exception of his stomach problems, he is actually doing really well. He is off the ventilator for 4 hours a day now (2 hours in the morning and 2 in the afternoon/evening). He is wearing his helmet for 23 hours a day to help round out the back of his head. It's amazing the improvement we've already seen. The last big update is from his ENT surgery. He was in the hospital on 10/12 to have the fluid drained from his ears and have his hearing tested. The doctor was anticipating having to put tubes in his ears. Once he was in for surgery, the doctor drained the fluid and determined that he did not need tubes after all. Just the beginning of the good news. The audiologist came and talked to me after that. Wesley passed his hearing test with no problems, everything was normal. It's always nice to hear good news!!!

Moving past the medical updates, let's get to the fun stuff!!! Wesley has 9 teeth now!!! He has his 4 top front teeth, 4 bottom front teeth, and a molar on the bottom left. That one was painful!!! And although he's not crawling or walking yet, he is able to sit without support and rolls around all over the place. He can push up during tummy time, and he'll move his legs around, he just hasn't figured out how to put it all together yet. But that's ok, it's all still relatively new to him. He loves his rattles, and still talks a lot, but no definite words yet. We have had the opportunity to take him out a few times, once to the pumpkin patch down the street from the house, and then again around the block on Halloween. He's not quite sure what to think about it, but it's a new experience. We attempted to take him to a fall festival, but he wanted nothing to do with the sounds and smells, so we had to leave after about 10 minutes. He gave it a shot though, that was also the night his molar broke through.

I have some cute pictures from the pumpkin patch and Halloween that I will post soon. Just for now, keep little Wesley in your prayers as he endures yet another hospital stay.

Defying the Odds.... Happy Birthday Wesley

We went into the hospital on Thursday 09/11/08. I was sick, you were still growing. The doctors said we would have to deliver... only 24 weeks pregnant. We all prayed for other options, the doctors said there were none. Delivery was scheduled for the next day, Friday 09/12/08 at 2:00 pm through c-section. That next morning, prayers were heard and answered... I was stable, you were stable. Delivery would be placed on standby. We would wait until one of us fell into distress. It could be hours, days, weeks, even months. Even with the news of stability, no one expected us to have much time. It was the following night, Saturday 09/13/08 when the doctors said, "It's time." They said you may not make it through the delivery. We heard different numbers from different doctors.... 50/50, 60/40, 35/65, different percentages of surviving delivery, but even if you made it through delivery, the chances of survival were not much better. We all prayed for a miracle, for protection, for life. Our prayers were heard and answered... at 9:15pm 09/13/08 "It's a boy!" Only 1 lb 7.3 oz, 10 3/4" long, but you were alive. Little Wesley James Byork came to join our family. We were all so scared, we all continued to pray. We all prayed for healing, for health, for strength. Our prayers were once again heard and answered. Although not every day was a good day, you made it through. You struggled, suffered, but ultimately fought your way through. God gave you that fighting spirit... He gave us nurses and doctors and therapists to care for you and never give up on you... He put His healing hands around you and lifted you up when you were falling. 7 long months later, you were finally able to leave the NICU. Then after what seemed like a quick stay at Baylor (compared to your time in the NICU), you were finally home, 06/09/09. Now we celebrate 1 year. One glorious, miraculous year. A year of joys and sorrows, a year of smiles and tears. A year that included 5 major surgeries (PDA ligation, Nissen, hernia repair, g-tube, and trach) and numerous so called "minor" surgical procedures (including PICC lines, broviac lines, spinal taps). A year that is now over, but never forgotten. Seeing you today, and remembering where you have been, it amazes me. Nothing brings more joy to my life than seeing you smile, hearing your little giggle, watching you get bigger and stronger every day! I know God has big plans for you little one.... He chose to give you life. So happy birthday to you, our little miracle gift from above.
Here are some comparison pictures from birth to now.... WOW!!!

We love you little Wesley James!!!!
